Abstract(s)
The article deals with the history and etymology of the word kníry "moustache" and its derivatives. Czech etymological dictionaries do not give a clear answer concerning the origin of the word linking it to the first part of the Germ. Schnurrbart "moustache". The author investigates this relation analyzing Czech and German lexical material, which leads to a confirmation of the semantic (or rather onomatopoeic) connection between two German verbs: schnurren "to murmur" and knirren "to crunch". It is observed that much as it is possible to explain Germ. Schnurrbart as "murmuring beard" in an analogous way it is possible to explain Czech kniry as "crunching beard".
