Abstract(s)
Recent research in the cognitive science of religion has shown that maturationally natural features of human psychology shape and constrain religious traditions. The theory of "modes of religiosity" contributes to this new field by showing how the scale, structure, and spread of religion are influenced by the frequency and emotionality of collective rituals. This theory has been the subject of extensive critical discussion among anthropologists, historians, and archaeologists in recent years, as a result of which it has undergone modification in various ways. The present article summarizes the theory as it currently stands.
