Abstract(s)
Medieval fortifications on the island of Kos bear witness to tumultuous events that the island went through between the Byzantine period and the Turkish invasion. The Order of the Knights of St. John used the only early fortification, in the mainland town of Pyli, and constructed further three fortifications. The first one was the fortified settlement of Antimacheia, the second the town and castle of Kos on the coast, and the third was Kefalos Castle. The island also supplied St. Peter's Castle in Bodrum, on the coast of Asia Minor. However, even major reinforcements of the fortifications did not prevent the annexation of the Dodecanese by the Ottoman Empire in 1523.
