Abstract(s)
This paper examines verbal vulgarity at a primary and lower secondary school, particularly its frequency, forms, and functions. It presents the findings of four case studies of different classrooms, exploring the use of vulgarisms and drawing on information obtained using a questionnaire. Vulgarisms were analyzed in terms of their function and active use. The paper compares their use during breaks and classes, thus taking into account the formality of the situation during which they are used. The findings also take into account the gender of users. They show that: (i) boys swear more often than girls; (ii) the occurrence of vulgarisms is higher during breaks than during classes; and (iii) teenagers use vulgarisms more than younger children. Since the usage of vulgarisms is increasing among teenage girls (especially during the breaks), the paper suggests that girls are more effective at differentiating situational norms than boys.
