Abstract(s)
This paper focuses on the records from the trial of the Templars. Based upon John H. Arnold's work, especially his concept of excess of speech, it argues that the constructing of identity of an interrogated, an inquisitor respectively, depends on specific ways of employing different sources and fields of knowledge, which are accessible to the essential actors of the interrogation (an investigated Templar and an inquisitor). I argue, that those sources of knowledge broaden and shift the borders of the inquisitional discourse; doing so through constructed itentities of the actors. The study analyzes records from one particular diocesan investigation of the Templars and it's general aim lies in reading the court testimonies, the "voices" of the actors, as testimonies on different sources of knowledge, that intermingle during the trial and form the report on an alleged heresy.
