Description
A second edition of Mikhail Bachtin's book on Dostoevsky, in which he introduced the concept of "polyphony" into literature, was published in 1963 and attracted considerable attention. In several interviews starting in the mid-1960s, Solženicyn stated his direct interest in "polyphony" and indicated that he was applying it in works that he was then writing. These include the story Cancer Ward. In this study, the author examines the narrative system used in Cancer Ward, its relationship to the narrative technique used earlier in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, its implementation of the principles of "polyphony" and the resultant impact on the way in which the work has to be read.
