Popis
The topic of folk jewellery is still completely neglected in Czech and Moravian ethnology. The attention has been paid mainly to distinct manifestations, e.g. to Těšín (Ciezsyn) jewellery. Only the jewellery which formed a part of the folk costume and was created in village environment for the needs of own community is considered folk jewellery. The study of iconographic records confirms the fact that mainly women in the country felt the need for adornments in the same way as the inhabitants of cities did. the collection of gouaches from 1814 is an informative documentation on wearing jewellery with folk costumes – a great number of female figures have at least a string of red beads round their neck, probably from Bohemian garnets or their imitations. These adornments were not manufactured directly in folk environment, their owners mainly bought them on markets and fairs. All the same they formed an integral part of traditional clothing and adornments, and therefore they need to be included in ethnological study.
