The topic of the paper is devoted to the research, which took place in 2010-2011 in the framework of the specific research on Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts. The research was focused on four Miloslav Ištvan's compositions for string quartet, which are especially remarkable by the fact, that these works virtually extend to all the creative periods of this remarkable composer and in this sense are mapping his overall compositional development. Particularly referenced are historical circumstances of each composition and their formal analysis. Above mentioned compositions were examined in a comprehensive way (history/form/interpretation) and the results of the research were summarized in two outputs. Theoretical output represents the publication Formální a interpretační problematika smyčcových kvartetů Miloslava Ištvana (Štěpán Filípek - Michal Indrák, HF JAMU, 2010) and as practical output appeared CD Miloslav Ištvan - Complete works for string quartet (Miloslav Ištvan Quartett, Pavlik records, 2010).
