Description
New works by Viktor Pelevin, Vladimir Sorokin and Mariia Galina demonstrate that the tradition of the fantastic in Russian literature is not simply flourishing but appears to be the strongest element in contemporary literature. The present-day fantastic is not merely the legacy of Gogol but, as in the age of Gogol, may well be the result of the specific social and historical context. As it was absurd to consider Gogol as merely a social critic as was the case in the Soviet era, so it would be absurd to put him in the same category as those writers today who are utterly in thrall to wizards, witches and demons and are concerned with nothing but popularity and ephemeral success. Harry Potter reigns all over God's earth and Sergei Lukiianenko's heroes and heroines are not far behind, but long live Gogol and his real heirs! The present paper discusses the novels The Sacred Book of the Werewolf, Ice, and Givi and Shenderovich (English title: Iramifications). The first two texts mix black humour with violence, sex and gangsterism, while the third – not only in the spirit of Gogol but Il'f and Petrov too - offers the reader a picaro (a loveable rogue) and a fantastic journey. The absurdities that we find in these writers will be readily understood by students of Russia and Russian culture. And where is Russian literature heading? As Ostap Bender said: The meeting is still in session...
