Abstract(s)
On the background of the general theory of politeness, the article deals with impoliteness in language communication. As shown at assumed communicative situations possibly giving rise to impolite utterances, impoliteness should be treated primarily as a matter of relationships among interlocutors, its interpretation depending solely on the addressee. In certain discourses, impoliteness is expectable and tolerated. Impoliteness, rudeness and sauciness (impertinence) can be distinguished, based on the unequal "power" positions of interlocutors. Unlike politeness, impoliteness has hardly any specific means of expression, and even vulgarity (constituting rudeness) need not be a straight mark of an impolite act of communication.
