Abstract(s)
During the World War II, Jiří Veltruský (1919–1994) did not attend the Prague University but became a student of the Prague Linguistic Circle, and thus actually the first pupil of Jan Mukařovský. Due to the Communist coup d'état, he had to flee Czechoslovakia in 1948, and spent the rest of his life mostly in Paris. Politically, Veltruský was very active: on the one hand, he tirelessly unmasked the Communist totalitarianism, on the other hand, he coordinated international free trade unions. From the mid-seventies on, Veltruský returned to structural semiotics; making use of his former Prague education, he analyzed arts and primarily theatre. The semiotic path of his life is reconstructed here on the basis of historical documents, partially unknown so far, with the addition of his complete semiotic bibliography. Veltruský's methods of theatre analysis are reinterpreted especially with respect to his use of the concept of semantical gesture (as introduced by Mukařovský).
