Abstract(s)
English strolling players who traveled through the continent for about a century (starting officially around 1585) had a huge influence on both continental theatre and drama. The following text pays attention to one of the phenomena they brought to continental Europe - their clownish figures, above all that of Pickelhering. Based on contemporary remarks and dramatic texts preserved, two fundamental functions of Pickelhering are distinguished: that of simple clown and, on the other hand, a role which touches upon the figure of Shakespeare's wise fool. The first is to be connected to the travelling troupes and their clownish figures, whereas the latter characterizes the clownish figures present in the dramatic pieces written on the Continent. This "double role" is further characterized due to Shakespeare's distinction between his figures of clown and fool.
