Abstract(s)
In the Baroque age there were basically two ways of making a visual documentation of collections: an inventory in the form of drawings and a picture gallery. These basic iconographic possibilities continued to be used in practice in various alternative forms into the 19th and 20th centuries. In order to execute them, newly discovered graphic techniques were used, in particular lithography, and later on especially photographic technology. The discovery of photography signified a revolution in the way works of art were reproduced, and photographs also gradually replaced other methods of making visual documentations of collections. In the Moravian Gallery in Brno there have been preserved examples of the photographic documentation of two private art collections from the early decades of the 20th century: firstly two albums of photographs showing the collection of paintings of the factory-owner Arnold Skutezky (1850–1936), and secondly an exceptionally valuable album documenting the art collection of Mrs. Ella Troller (1897–1928), the contents of which are today mostly dispersed in various places. This last album also contains views of the interiors of the Trollers' villa in Brno with the artefacts that were installed there.
