Description
The contribution deals with the contribution of Antonín Václavík to the studies of social culture in ethnography/ethnology. It is particularly based on his book on the village named Chorvátsky Grob, which is, to this date, the most important local monograph in Slovakia. It was published in 1925 under the name Podunajská dedina v Československu. Václavík goes on to interpret his findings (as described therein) within broader Central European ethnographic and cultural contexts (historical, ethnical, confessional, etc.). Data on social culture can be found in chapters on citizens and occupations (on the village life, family structures, property relations), as well as in chapters on education, religion, nationality... and elsewhere (e.g. in chapters on architecture, clothing, personal hygiene, nicknames, emigration). Along with a monograph on the Moravian Slovakia (ed. L. Niederle, 1922) this book inspired other authors of local monographs. In today's terms, it is a source of information about some phenomena of traditional cultures that no longer exist.
