Description
The author analyses the meaning of semiotic understanding of a "coat" in Nicholas Gogol's. (Greatcoat) and Anton Tchehov's (Chameleon) short stories, using Ch. S. Peirce's establishments related to a trichotomic arrangement – including the way of displaying understanding through a sign. One of fundamental issues examined by the author is the context connected with a "quality", "feature", "occurrence" and "law", following Peirce. The basic meaning of the Gogol's semiosis is connected by the author with a character of Petrovich as a "brother" who releases thinking and feeling in Bashmachkin, in contrast with the character of Peter I ("horse muzzle") who kills this thinking. The author concentrates on discovering the meaning of such objects as "finger", "snuffbox", "halberd", "snuff", which creates a possibility of talking about the law of "late" halberd and the law of „late“ habit of taking a snuff. This leads to lawless capturing of the "coat". In Tchehov's semiosis the author underlines, most of all, the importance of objects such as "small bundle" and "gooseberry". The semantic network of "occurrences", "qualities" and "features" creates in Chameleon lawless, because based on kormlenija (derived from kormit', in Russian: to feed) rule, way of behaviour and lifestyle of the characters. A representative of an idea of the "Third Rome" – Ochumelov – grotesque and tragicomic, stuck to the "letter" of law, which is personified by the "coat", clearer and clearer loses the chances of saving face. He is deprived of this chance by the crowd – a collective demon (favoring Yewdirin), before whom the character defends himself using the "coat" as a curtain.
