Abstract(s)
Zdeněk Kudělka and Jaromír Neumann were among the most prominent figures in Czech art history of the second half of the 20th century. The study describes some of the letters exchanged between them with the aim of providing a deeper understanding of the work of these two figures. Materials from the early 1980s shed light on the origin of Neumann's study for a festschrift in honour of Ivo Krsek. This study is centred on the exchange of opinions in the letters between the two art historians about an iconological method that Kudělka, opposed to Neumann, overtly regarded as an instrument of limited use. The letters dating from early 1989 emerged in a different context, following Jaromír Neumann's release from prison. They provide valuable insight into his professional intentions, which he however only partly managed to fulfil.
