Description
A relief of a renaissance stove tile, probably found in Plzeň, features a winged woman naked to the waist. The bottom section of her body in the original composition was possibly a scaly tail; however, the artist of the relief template changed it into a fish with a dolphin's head. The motif may be classified with a group inspired by legends of the fairy Melusine, compiled by Jean d'Arras in 1393. This hypothesis is supported by similar representations on the portal of the Pardubice chateau, featuring a half-naked and winged woman. Before firing, the tile maker had cut a vertical section across the front (heating) side. Traces of smoke show that the tile was once a part of a stove, despite this aesthetic drawback.
