Abstract(s)
Despite the concept of working memory is currently perhaps the most influential concept of cognitive psychology, there is a lot of theoretical haziness. Conflicts arise also regarding the empirical evaluation of the performance of particular cognitive processes, thus about determination of working memory capacity. Because of the historical context the concept of working memory is closely linked to executive functions, attention and various types of memory to the extent, that makes it sometimes impossible to distinguish specific concepts. Theoretical development in last two decades shifted the concept of working memory from memory phenomena more towards attentional and executive phenomena. Working memory as attentional phenomenon is linked to various laboratory tasks and real-world situations including fluid intelligence or self-control. This article aims at clarifying present situation regarding these constructs and indicate different definitions and approaches to this concept as well as to refer to new knowledge in this field.
