Música y educación en la Grecia arcaica y clásica

Abstract

This work offers an overview of ancient Greek education, its training programmes, and the development of educators and schools. The prominent role that music had since Homeric times in the formation of the individual, along with gymnastics, will be emphasized. With the development of the educational systems of the different regimes and the rise of philosophy and oratory, music was considered as not only educating, but also guiding the human soul, since it was noted how rhythms, melodies, and musical modes could cause certain effects on those who heard them. Therefore, it soon became a vehicle for intellectual and moral training. This article will focus on this aspect of education and music in the Archaic and Classical periods of Ancient Greece, leaving the Hellenistic and Imperial periods for other studies.

Este trabajo ofrece un panorama general de la educación griega antigua, de sus programas formativos y del desarrollo de pedagogos y escuelas. En ellos se hará hincapié en el destacado papel que la música tuvo en la formación del individuo, junto con la gimnasia, desde época homérica. Con el desarrollo de los sistemas educativos de los distintos regímenes y con el auge de la Filosofía y la Oratoria, la música fue considerada no solo para educar, sino también para guiar el alma humana, pues se advirtió del efecto que ciertos ritmos, melodías y modos musicales podían provocar al ser escuchados. Así, pronto se convirtió en vehículo de formación intelectual y moral. Este artículo se centrará en este aspecto de la educación y de la música en las épocas arcaica y clásica de la Grecia antigua, dejando los períodos helenístico e imperial para otro trabajo.
