Abstrakt(y)
The study offers an analysis of selected works of art and especially the caricatures created by artists Antonín Pelc (1895–1967), František Bidlo (1895–1945), and Adolf Hoffmeister (1902–1973) that are united by their thematic focus on the events of the Spanish Civil War. The selected works are interpreted in relation to the historical context to which they refer, and considerable attention is also devoted to the contemporary political discourse around the artists to which their work is thus indelibly linked. The study also examines how these works functioned as political propaganda and using specific examples illustrates how some iconographic motifs that were particularly characteristic for the interwar period were employed. The aim of the study is to present a collection of works by different artists as one whole set centred on a single theme of reference and to outline the possibilities for reconstructing a particular contemporary discourse out of a comparison of these works.
