Popis
The paper deals with a problem of canonization of N. V. Gogol in Russian culture by pointing the exceptional role that Gogol has in the Russian cultural historical models. The culture's inability to periodically uniformly determine Gogol's role in it's own history is examined in the light of the author's artistic goals and the role of mask and masking in his literature. The mask and the masking process are therefore analysed as a form of prosopopy in which the author exposes the depth of his own voice by masking it and speaking in the name of various narrators and heroes, thereby trying to create an illusion of the voice without a tangible source (the Voice of God in Old Testament) as the ultimate literary incarnation of the Truth.
