Popis
Gogolian Reminiscences in Zamyatin's Short Story "The Watch" (1934). Gogol's work was important for Zamyatin from the beginning. References to Gogol in the writer's autobiographies, essays, and lectures on the techniques of fictional prose are not numerous but are very important for understanding Gogol's role in Zamyatin's literary biography. In the middle of the 1930s, Zamyatin again actualized the Gogolian tradition in his work. This actualization was connected with a rekindled interest in the theme of St Petersburg and Zamyatin's altered perception of that theme. In the short story "The Watch" (1934), Zamyatin connects various tendencies of the 1930s, such as the development of the new foreign reader-oriented genre of the short story and the interpretation of the theme of St Petersburg in a Gogolian way (both from Zamyatin's point of view). Foreign readerorientation, in this case, does not mean a simplification of the author's poetics. In the example of the short story "The Watch" it becomes evident that Zamyatin's texts of the 1930s are "resonant" and "self-resonant" in principle: reminiscence (as well as quotation and allusion) is an important constructive device that appears here.
