Abstrakt(y)
The author of the paper tries to compare very richly attested miscellaneous and specialized ancient Greek magical tradition - that is, defixiones (in this case only those dealing with love themes) and similar Latin documents from the period of the Roman Empire. The Greek love spells have survived on lead tablets as well as on papyri and they also occur in literary works. There are ca. thirty extant Latin love spells on lead tablets; they can be divided into two basic groups: courses directed at love rivals and erotic spells, which are supposed to inspire love and excite uncontrollable passion.
