The present contribution examines the question of the gradual revelation of Gogol's sexual maze from a funny and a light plot of the first of his comedies Marriage (Женитьба‚ 1833). The play does not describe the situation of engagement or marriage only; in this case the motif is underlined as major and the recipient expects that the intrigue will unfold around him. But the real marriage in the play is not realised, the declared events do not take place. Moreover, in the work entitled Marriage there is no space for the talks about love. The author deals with the stuff which was not personally experienced; so the text primarily fulfils the function of the therapeutic session-speech whereby Gogol could be released from his fears. From this standpoint, the comedy can be seen in the context of the 19th-century Russian dramaturgical canon seeks the answer to the question which became a real kernel of Gogol's dramatic repertoire.
