Abstrakt(y)
Dílo Enterprise – Czech Fine Art Fund (Český fond výtvarných umění Dílo) is an essential archival resource for research on works of art in the public space and on artistic installations in architectural work from the 1950s–1980s in former Czechoslovakia. Dílo was founded in 1954, and one of its purposes was to organise the installation of art in works of architecture. These works of art were commissioned and approved by expert committees set up by the Art Service (Výtvarná služba). A key role in securing approval for a monumental work of art was played by the Commission for Cooperation between Architect and Artist (Komise pro spolupráci architekta s výtvarníkem). Archive materials that provide a record of their meetings shed light on the process that was involved in commissioning a work of art, from the initial selection of the artist, to the approval of the work in various stages of its preparation, the creation of the work in the studio, and the final approval of the work. The minutes from meetings of the committee, their typed transcripts, and other documents and records together present a list of commissions and basic information about the investor and the collaborating architect and artist. The materials can also be used to reconstruct the more general phenomena, procedures, and organisational aspects of the commissioning and creation of these works of art. Archive materials offer wide opportunities to see the individual works in the context of how they were created, as is demonstrated by a survey on the artistic decoration of the Centroprojekt building in Zlín that is included at the end of the study.
