Abstract(s)
This article focuses on the National Theatre of Nitra County, later also called the County Theatre, or the Municipal Theatre, built in 1883. The theatre committee was convened by the major Hungarian theatre architect Adolf Voyta (1834–1923). The article will discuss the circumstances of the idea for the construction of a permanent theatre in Nitra, as well as details of its construction, architecture, decoration and the personalities who contributed to its creation. The study also aims to place the theatre in the broader context of 19th century Hungarian and European theatre architecture. As study of the theatre, unfortunately a casualty of World War II, shows, this was high-quality period architecture, going beyond the provincial nature of the city. The importance at the time of Budapest as the architectural centre of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and other Hungarian cities can be considered significant.
