Abstract(s)
Different and conflicting hypotheses have been put forward to date and determine a possible geographic and artistic context for the cloisonnés enamels on the cross of the cathedral treasury of Salerno. Deriving a position from unpublished documents, this paper suggests that these enamels originally belonged to a mitre of Bishop Orso Minutolo (d. 1333). Stylistic and historical analysis indicates that these enamels were modeled in Naples after the Parisian émaux de plique. The importance of precious mitres in the Angevin context is also discussed.
