Rhodos johanité získali po ztrátě Svaté země (1291) v roce 1309. Dodekanéskou državu bránili proti maloasijským emirátům a posléze moci osmanské říše. Po dobytí Konstantinopole Osmané dvakrát Rhodos dobývali – vylepšené opevnění roku 1480 odolalo a bylo znovu modernizováno. Ani zesílení hradeb, rozšíření příkopů s vloženými kleštěmi a vybavení uzlových bodů polygonálními bollwerky nezabránilo za obležení v roku 1522 čestné kapitulaci a odchodu johanitů. Opravené opevnění patří k významným komplexům své doby.
The Order of the Knights of St. John acquired Rhodes in 1309, after the loss of the Holy Land (1291). They defended the Dodecanese holding from the emirates of Asia Minor and later from the Ottoman Empire. After conquering Constantinople the Ottomans twice attempted to seize Rhodes; the fortification, upgraded in 1480, withstood their attack and was subsequently improved again. However, even the reinforcement of the town walls, expansion of moats with inserted tenaillons and the construction of polygonal bastions at key points did not prevent the town from a surrender after a siege in 1522, followed by the departure of the Order of the Knights of St. John. The restored fortification is among the major defence structures of the period.
