Samo Czambel was a Slovak linguist who distinguished himself through the stabilization of the standard Slovak language at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This paper points to the conflicts between fealty to the state and commitment to the nation through one of Czambel's highly debated texts – published in Hungarian and later translated into Czech – focusing on the contemporary Czech-Slovak relations.
