Abstract(s)
The study entitled "The story of a Civilisation which Excecded its Limita" analyses examples of critiques of immodest lifestyles associated with Roman civilisation in the Late Republic and Roman Empire, as written by Roman authors. First, the author defines the process of crisis in the development of the Roman economy and lifestyle and then he analyses individual historical evidence. Contemporary critique was concentrated on the lavish lifestyles and consumption and the unhealthy phenomena connected with them in both the economy and society. Many of these have analogies in our times. The critique has been strongly influenced by the Roman philosophy of history, comprising the development of material civilisation as a negative power which speeds moral and social decay.
